On Thursday 8 September I spent a couple of hours photographing back stage preparations ofr a fashion show by designer Jasper Garvida.

There were about 80 models and more costume and make up people crammed into two studios. It was a little hot and chaotic.

I wanted to do a black and white reportage style shoot of the backstage preparations. Not a glamourous shoot, but capturing what was.

I decided to only use black and white for the shoot (despite the marvelous colour of some of Jasper's costumes and the make up. Black and white worked better at removing distracting clutterous colour and focussing on the basic,

I took with me three cameras: the small digital Fuji X100, a digital Leica M9 and a film Leica M7 rangefinder. Two lenses: the Zeiss 25mm Biogon f2 and the Leica 50mm Summicron f2. The X100 has a fixed 35mm f2 lens.

I only used flash once, I wanted to use the natural light. This meant I shot most photos wide open and with high isos and/or low shutter speeds.
